My name is Bella Wiener and I am a high school senior in Oregon. As my days as a high schooler are nearing an end, I want to do something special. After I spent two weeks at the Summer Leadership Institute at Brown University where I took a course in Leadership in Global Health, I created a plan to raise around $50,000 to donate to a charitable cause through inviting around 10-12 people (each climber is required to raise at least $5000 by July 1st) to climb Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania.
After doing extensive research on a variety of organizations, I chose to donate the money raised to SHE: Sustainable Health Enterprises. SHE recognizes the need for equal education opportunities for girls and women in Rwanda, and found that one obstacle that has been overlooked far too long is access to feminine hygiene products. So, the money raised for the Kilimanjaro SHE Climb will go towards building a business in Rwanda to manufacture and distribute affordable menstrual pads so that girls and women can more confidently participate in school and work.
For the Kilimanjaro SHE Climb, we will be trekking the Lemosho Route with Summit Expeditions and Nomadic Experience (http://www.nomadicexperience.com/karibu-welcome/). The time spent with SENE will begin on June 16, 2015 and will last 11 days/10 nights, with eight of those days spent on the mountain.
Consider this you official invitation to join the climb or donate to an amazing cause!
